How does Liraglutide work?
Liraglutide is a synthetic version of natural gut hormone GLP-1, human body makes natural GLP-1 after you eat, but it may last up-to just few minutes i.e., 1-2 minutes. It is glucose-dependent.
- When the glucose level is less than 100 mg/dL, liraglutide tends beta cells to release insulin, if glucose drops to normal level then insulin release may stop.
- Alpha cells which is present in pancreas i.e., in islets of Langerhans, suppresses glucagon secretion, this glucagon tends liver to dump sugar into blood this led the liver to make less sugar. Here blood sugar level may drop.
- Liraglutide may binds GLP-1 receptors in hypothalamus, here cravings drop especially for high fat and sugary foods.
- Liver stops producing unnecessary glucose when the glucagon levels may drop and insulin increase, in the condition of type 2 diabetes, the liver often produces sugar overnight, liraglutide cut that off.
- It may reduce albuminuria and slow CKD (Chronic kidney disease) progression, this decrease glucose, also decreases BP, and weight and shows anti-inflammatory effects on the kidney GLP-1 receptors.Â
