Metronidazole is a nitroimidazole antibiotic and antiprotozoal used to treat anaerobic bacterial and parasitic infections. It is formulated to treat bacterial vaginosis, trichomoniasis, C. difficile, Giardiasis and Anaerobic abscesses. It may work by entering anaerobic organisms, it may gets activated to toxic radicals that may kill them by damaging their DNA.

How does Metronidazole work?
Metronidazole is known to be as prodrug, it only becomes active inside anaerobic bugs. It may work by:
- It may enter anaerobic cell, it passively diffuses into bacteria/protozoa that live without oxygen. In the human cell it stays inactive as it is aerobic.
- Inside anaerobes, electron transport proteins may reduce the nitro group of metronidazole. This may create toxin free radicals and also creates cytotoxin intermediates.
- These free radicals may break DNA strands and also inhibit DNA synthesis, in this situation cell is unable to replicate or repair and ultimately dies.
- In the presence of oxygen, it may re-oxidize the drug back to inactive form, that’s the main reason it only kills anaerobes and microaerophilic drugs.
Safety & Efficacy
- It may lead to GI (Gastro intestinal) related side effects like nausea, metallic taste, anorexia, abdominal cramps, vomiting, headache and dizziness.
- It can be used in treating, bacterial vaginosis, trichomoniasis, C. difficile, giardiasis, and anaerobic abscesses.
Precautions
- If it may show neuro symptoms like numbness, tingling, seizures, confusion then avoid taking such products.
- If diarrhea symptom can be seen and if diarrhea get worsen then it results into treatment failure.
- Pregnant and breastfeeding should avoid taking such medications.
