Avosteride 0.5 mg is a capsule containing dutasteride which is a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor. It is officially used to treat Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), but physicians often prescribe it off-label for male pattern hair loss. It blocks the enzyme 5-alpha reductase which is necessary to convert testosterone to another hormone called Dihydrotestosterone (DHT).

How does Avosteride 0.5 mg work?

Avosteride 0.5 mg works in the following way:

  • Enzyme inhibition: Dutasteride blocks both the type 1 and type 2 isoenzymes of the 5-alpha reductase enzyme.
  • DHT reduction: It prevents the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT).
  • Follicle protection: Lowers the tissue and serum DHT concentration that eventually stops the progressive shrinking of hair follicles.
  • Growth cycle reset: It allows hair follicles to return to a normal, healthy growth phase.

  • Wash skin right away with soap and water if contact with leaking medicine occurs.

Blood Donation and Testing

  • Do not donate blood while taking dutasteride and for at least 6 months after stopping to prevent passing the drug to a pregnant transfusion recipient.
  • The drug lowers prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels by about 50%, so you must inform your physician  to ensure accurate prostate cancer screening.

  • Tell your physician  if you have liver problems, as the liver processes this medication.

Conclusion

Avosteride 0.5 mg (dutasteride) lowers DHT levels by blocking the 5-alpha reductase enzyme, making it effective for both BPH symptoms and male pattern hair loss. Its long-lasting action supports steady, once-daily dosing. However, due to its hormonal effects, drug interactions, and need for monitoring (especially PSA (prostate specific antigen) levels), it should only be used under medical supervision, with regular check-ins with a physician.
