Loniten 2.5 mg is the brand name for oral minoxidil manufactured by Pfizer. At lower doses, oral minoxidil (the same active ingredient found in Loniten) has also become a widely used off-label option for androgenetic alopecia; the most common form of pattern hair loss in both men and women.

How does Loniten 2.5 mg work?

Minoxidil opens potassium channels in cell membranes, which limits calcium entry into vascular smooth muscle cells. This relaxes the muscles surrounding blood vessels, causing them to widen (vasodilation). At higher doses, this vasodilation lowers systemic vascular resistance, reducing blood pressure-the basis of Loniten’s approved use in severe hypertension. At lower doses, the same vasodilating effect improves circulation to the scalp, which is thought to support nutrient and oxygen delivery to hair follicles and may extend the hair growth phase.

Uses

  • Androgenetic alopecia

Benefits

  • Helps stimulate hair regrowth in androgenetic alopecia
  • May improve hair density and hair thickness
  • Convenient once-daily oral tablet
  • Suitable for individuals who do not respond well to or cannot tolerate topical Minoxidil

Side effects

  • Increased heart rate (tachycardia)
  • Swelling of the feet or ankles (peripheral edema)
  • Fluid retention
  • Flushing
  • Increased body or facial hair (hypertrichosis)
  • Chest pain
  • Shortness of breath
  • Rapid weight gain
  • Severe dizziness or fainting

Interactions

  • Combined use can cause an excessive drop in blood pressure, increasing the risk of dizziness or fainting.
  • Guanethidine may cause severe orthostatic hypotension when combined with minoxidil.
  • Regular use of NSAIDs may cause fluid retention that counteracts minoxidil’s blood-pressure-lowering effect.
  • Alcohol may increase the risk or severity of side effects like dizziness and low blood pressure.

Precautions & Warnings

  • Regular monitoring of weight, heart rate, and blood pressure is typically required during treatment.
  • Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
  • Should not be used without medical supervision.
  • Do not use the product if allergic to minoxidil or any other non-medicated ingredient.
  • Keep out of reach from children and pets.
  • Minoxidil increases heart rate and thus caution should be practiced.

Conclusion

Loniten 2.5 mg is a potent vasodilator with an established role in managing severe hypertension that hasn’t responded to other treatments, and a separate off-label use for hair regrowth at lower doses. Because its cardiovascular effects and interaction profile are significant regardless of the dose or reason for use, it’s not a medication suited to self-directed use; a doctor should guide dosing, monitor for side effects, and confirm it’s appropriate given someone’s full medical history.
