Aristogyl 400 mg is an antibiotic medication that consists of metronidazole as its active ingredient which is a nitroimidazole antibiotic. It is commonly used for the treatment of conditions such as bacterial vaginosis, trichomoniasis,  gastrointestinal infections such as amoebiasis. It should be taken with food.

How does Aristogyl 400 mg work?

Metronidazole is a prodrug and it gets active only once it is in the body. It targets anaerobic organisms. Once inside the cells, the nitro group is enzymatically reduced into highly reactive cytotoxic intermediates. These reactive intermediates bind to and damage the microbe’s DNA. They cause DNA strand breakage, inhibit protein synthesis and trigger the degradation of existing nucleic acids resulting in microorganism death.

Astriogyl 400 mg dosage depends on the condition that is being treated. Use the medication as and when prescribed by the physician.

Interactions

• Oral anticoagulants like warfarin should not be used in combination with Aristogyl 400 mg as it can enhance the effects of the medication
• Using Aristogyl 400 mg could lead to increased levels of lithium in the body 
• Concomitant use of Aristogyl 400 mg and cyclosporine may increase the risk of cyclosporine toxicity. 
• Use Aristogyl 400 mg with extreme caution if you have any gastrointestinal issues, especially colitis as it can worsen the condition.
• Aristogyl 400 mg can worsen the risk of liver damage

Precautions

• Do not take metronidazole if you have disulfiram within the past 2 weeks. 
• It is usually contraindicated in pregnant women
• Avoid consumption of alcohol 
• Do not take the medication if your are hypersensitive to metronidazole or any other ingredient
• Complete the prescribed dosage for the given duration
• If you suffer from blood dyscrasias, use this medication with caution
