• Metronidazole passively diffuses across the cell membranes of susceptible microorganisms. 
• Inside the organism, specific proteins reduce the drug’s nitro group. This activates metronidazole into a highly reactive intermediate free radical. 
• These short-lived, cytotoxic intermediates bind to the organism’s DNA 
• The binding process causes the DNA strand to break which ultimately blocks nucleic acid synthesis and kills the cell.
